weigh in SFS

So when I started blogging here, I think I had about 20-25 pounds to lose.  Now I have 30 to lose, maybe 30 if I can pull it off.

I've been losing .5 pounds per morning for a few days.

So, I'm down 2.5 pounds.

Progress!

Hooray!

food log

The day before Thanksgiving and I'm still trying to diet, exercise, and lose weight.

Well, what did I eat yesterday?

I had 2 small blueberry pancakes
a slice of wheat bread with honey and butter
an apple
and mac and cheese with hot dogs

Now that's a winner of a dinner.

I did 30 minutes of personal trainer on Kinect.

I don't even know how to diet.  I certianly don't know how to lose weight.  I love to exercise but just don't feel like it.  ugh.  I hate feeling that way.  You too?  Oh good I'm glad it's not just me.

Today I ate:
slim fast
banana
chicken enchilada (cafe rio)
rice
black beans
2 slices of pepperoni pizza

I didn't have any snacks and that's probably all there is positive to say about my eating today.

I didn't do any formal exercise but I was kind of active and very pooped at the end of the day.  Tomorrow I do my big walk, so that will be good!

food log sfs

Yesterday I ate a lot of bread.
I had toast for breakfast, a sandwich of peanut butter and honey for lunch, and for dinner I ate fried rice (home made, no msg).

For exercise I did some deep cleaning and some Kinect.
Probably not enough exercise, but an overall active day.

Someone be honest with me... am I eating too much?  I'm not seeing any results yet.  Honesty.  Be brutal if you need to be.

1 medium banana
peanut butter and apricot jelly sandwich on wheat bread
.5 large apple

.25 c chili

I did 45 minutes of exercises on the Kinect.  I'm still learning what I like and spent the majority of that time doing kick boxing.  I didn't really burn that many calories though, at least according to the X Box.  I was glad I did something though, as I still haven't made it back to the pool in recent days... (almost 2 weeks)

Yesterday I ate:
3 cups of honey chex
turkey, potatoes, stuffing, green beans, cranberries, jello salad, roll
yes, we had Thanksgiving dinner yesterday.  My little brother is going on his mission next week so we had it early.
It was yummy but my sugars were really out of control all day yesterday.  Mostly I think because I'm coming down with a cold.  And partly because I ate too much jello salad.

I didn't do any exercise

Special K cereal
turkey sandwich w/o cheese (forgot it at the store, and saved 200 calories on lunch!)
rice and chicken with broccoli casserole
too much leftover Halloween candy

Yesterday I had lots of energy so I got some good activity in:
pulled the kids in the wagon to and from school for pick up (ie. once, not both trips)
mowed my Sandy on-a-hill lawn

If I could keep myself away from the candy, I could keep my blood sugar under control.  Someone stop me from raiding the candy bowl!!!

NaBoPoMo

Did you know that November is National Blog Posting Month (NaBoPoMo)?  It is also National Novel Writing Month, and National Diabetes Awareness Month.  So... what to blog about?  Well, I'm not a Novel Writer, so that's out.  I do have diabetes, but that's no fun to blog about, most days.  On this blog, I'm making a goal to blog each day this month about my diet and exercise.  On my other blog, I'm making a goal to blog about one thing I'm grateful for each day in the month of November.

I didn't write down what I ate yesterday.  It wasn't a lot but it was way too much sugar.  I had troubles with my blood sugar and a mild emotional break down.

Today I'm doing well but that Halloween candy is sure not making things easy.  My energy is up so much today!  I've accomplished lots and have wanted to do different activities.  I'm glad that I'm feeling more energy, and hopeful that my thyroid is stabilizing.

good news or bad?

Well, I saw the doctor this week, as I mentioned before.  The results are in.  I have hypothyroidism.  I'm really glad that they were able to diagnose it.  I'm also quite proud of myself for paying attention to my body and noticing that something was amiss, and accurately diagnosing myself on Web MD.
What is it?  My thyroid isn't producing enough hormone.
What can they do? Give me medication which should bring my levels back to normal, and reduce my symptoms including the weight gain.
What's the good news?  I've been diagnosed and I'll receive treatment.  The treatment should also aid in my metabolism and therefore my diabetes too.
What's the bad news?  I'll have to take another prescription medicine.  Most likely for the rest of my life.
What's interesting about it?  People who have one endocrine disorder are more prone to having another.  I recently learned this on a podcast for mothers.  There was a featured story on a young girl with Type 1 diabetes (the kind which I have) who was diagnosed because she'd already had another endocrine disorder; Graves Disease.

I'm grateful I was able to find help and hopeful that I'll start feeling more normal soon.   The past two weeks have been particularly poor.  Today I've felt so tired and lethargic.  I'm glad it's more than just adjusting to staying at home.

swimming

I could write an entire post dedicated to my 30 minute experience at the pool this morning.  I think I might just dump my thoughts here too because no one else wants to hear me ramble on.
I was so pumped that after 8 weeks of the pool being closed it was finally open again.  It is just the best form of exercise for me and the time, while brutal- at least for me, works out the best.
They had closed for resurfacing and I can't believe what they put on that pool.  Mark my words this is going to be a huge mistake.  They put in some kind of plastic lining on the pool and there are already air bubbles everywhere.  The lane lines and marks on the wall are taped over the top of the lining and you can tell that those things are going to peel right off.  I hope I'm wrong but I'm afraid they're going to have major problems with this crap.
The dumb life guard who works at 5:30 am decided he had to sweep one of the two available lanes and so I had to go over to the lane where there were no lane lines.  I wonder if you know what those lines are for anyway?  Besides holding you in your lane, or marking where you are swimming, they happen to absorb a great deal of waves or wake created by other swimmers.  I was there about 15 minutes when some guy 100 pounds heavier than me shows up and swims in the lane over (no lane lines).  He is creating so much wake that I'm all over the place and feeling super dragged down from him.  Arg!  That is the point of the lane line.  I was the first one there today and I would have really liked to have swum in the first lane.
If that lifeguard does that tomorrow, I'm going to ask him to move!
I didn't feel great in the water which wasn't really surprising because I haven't swum laps for quite some time.  I hope I'll start getting back to where I was in a week or two.
I did 30 minutes and swam about 800 yards.  Before the pool closed I was up to about 40 minutes and 1200 yards, so I've got some improving to do.  Sadly, I can only afford 40 minutes before my husband has to leave but I plan on getting back to where I was before.
I'm just really glad the pool is back open again.

bad week

Well, what can I say?  I've been having a really rough time with my diabetes lately.  Things are getting back to normal, I hope!  I've had some other health issues lately too so I went to the doc today.  He is running some tests and I should find out the results by Thursday.  I hope that they are conclusive tests and that I don't have to have any further blood drawn.  No body likes that.  Today I had two different blood samples taken and was given my flu shot.  I feel as though I've been sufficiently poked and prodded.
I'm planning on hitting the pool tomorrow morning.  It has been closed since the middle of August so that is several weeks without regular exercise.  I'm excited and a little nervous.  These other health problems have left me feeling very tired and even lethargic.  I'm hopeful that I'll be able to wake up and stay awake tomorrow.
Excited to exercise.  Also looking forward to figuring out these health issues.  And maybe once all that is said and done I can start losing some weight.
How are the rest of you doing?
I hardly ate anything today, I was busy, and didn't have much of an appetite.

from awful to dreadful

Well, because I ate so horribly yesterday, I went to bed with a high blood sugar, I think it was about 270.  I bolused (took insulin) for the high and figured I'd wake up somwehere in the 160 range.  Wrong!  I was 232.  I ate my usual breakfast of a slim fast shake and banana and went to volunteer at the school for a few hours while Ryan was in Kindergarten.

-Side note- I was in a really crummy mood because yesterday hadn't gone very well and I really didn't want to go over to the school at all but I had promised a few teachers I would go.  I didn't spend as much time as I usually do on myself in the morning and it showed.  I looked like junk.  And people noticed.

Then I started feeling pretty poorly, and people could really tell.  I had a weird chest pain and what felt like a fever.  Being diabetic, I automatically thought it was my sugar.  I decided that my attempt at getting anything done at school was futile and figured I'd better get home and get some more rest (didn't sleep well last night either which is pretty normal for me).  On my way out into the parking lot I figured I'd check on my pump site.  It was disconnected.  Which meant that it had probably been that way since I put my shorts on, before I ate breakfast, and bloused for breakfast.  Translation: I hadn't gotten any insulin to cover for my high, nor my breakfast, nor for the past three hours.  I KNEW my sugar was high but I only live about three minutes for the school so I decided to just throw the toddler in the car and check it when I got home.  It was 521!  (Normal range is 80-120).  I tested again just to be sure and my meter was only 3 points different.

So, I'm feeling pretty crappy and now I know why.  I took a shot of 16 units, bloused 2 units with a 1 hour reminder so that I could check it to see how far it had come down.

It has now been about 6 hours and I'm still running in the 300 range.  I ate a few crackers for lunch and drank 2 diet cokes and 1 water.  I'm hoping my sugars will be down in the 100 range here pretty soon.

What's really a bummer about highs is the inevitable low that follows.  I'll end up with too much insulin in my system, and probably not enough food, and will go low.  It will probably happen during my tutoring session which is scheduled in about an hour from now.  Then I won't be able to think straight and the kid will think I'm a weirdo.

Ah, the roller coaster of diabetes.

Tips for becoming a Sugar Free Sweetie

I haven't been as diligent as I thought I'd be at posting this week.  I thought that for today, instead of posting my food log or weigh in, that I'd post some tips for going sugar free, or low carb, how ever you like to phrase it.  I wrote this post a while back on my friend's fitness blog.  Her blog is called "Fit me Pink" and she does an amazing job of writing about health and fitness.  You can link to it here: http://fitmepink.blogspot.com My original post can be found here: [my post] but I'll also just paste the text in this post as well.

My name is Jen and I’m posting mostly because I’m diabetic and I thought I’d offer a few tips for how to go sugar-free, or low-carb. A little about me to introduce myself to the readers… I’m 30 and have 2 kids. I’ve had diabetes for  a little over 9 years.  I have type 1 diabetes which means that I am insulin resistant (ie, I have to take insulin to control my sugars and essentially stay alive). Because I was diagnosed as an adult (20 years old) I was basically expected to figure things out for myself. At the time of my diagnosis, I pretty much went information crazy. I looked up everything I could find about diabetes and learned a lot. I continue to read a lot about the condition and find it very fascinating. I love to talk about diabetes and how it affects my life. I also blog about my diabetes occasionally. You can check out those posts on my blog by clicking on the diabetes label link (found in the footer).

Life post-diagnosis has changed in some ways greatly and in other ways very minimally. I can still eat like pretty much every one else, I just have to monitor all of my carbohydrates. As a diabetic, I’m concerned with all sugars: glucose, fructose, and lactose. But what I have to pay attention to most on a food label or food item that I’m eating is the total number of carbohydrates. I count carbs in everything I eat and drink so that I know how much insulin to take. My diet is not completely carbohydrate-free and I don’t really recommend that sort of an approach.

Having children is one way that diabetes greatly impacted my life. I have to monitor my sugars extremely carefully and work really hard at keeping them within a very normal range. I’ve had two healthy baby boys and they both weighed about 8.5 pounds. Their lungs were fully developed and neither boy suffered any post-birth effects from my diabetes. These are my greatest diabetic accomplishments. While living with diabetes can be difficult, there are even days when I forget that I am diabetic, and for that, I am very thankful. It wouldn’t be possible without the help of all of the wonderful diabetic advancements and improvements science has brought us.

Here are my tips for going sugar free!

1.Decide what kind of carbs you want to cut, and then set some goals.

2.Cut the unnecessary carbs. Desserts and things high in sugar often have an alternative. Be aware that some things that say "sugar-free" or "no sugar added" on the labels actually do have some carbs, so you’ll want to check the label to find out how many. If you compare the sugar free version with a regular product, you usually notice at least a 20% decrease in total carbohydrates.

3.Just because it’s "sugar free" doesn’t mean it tastes like cardboard! There are a lot of really good "sugar-free," or "no-sugar-added" products that taste pretty good. Some of my favorites are: Jell-O sugar free pudding, Yoplait light yogurt, Smuckers no sugar added jelly, light maple syrup, and Dryer’s slow-churned no-sugar-added ice-cream.

4.Choose a favorite sugar-free treat...and stock up! There are actually treats out there that have very few carbs, and some have none. 7-11 has a great Crystal Light Slurpee with only 5 calories per 8 ounces and zero carbs. The Cheese Cake Factory sells a "Carb Free" cheesecake that only has 6 carbs! My suggestion is to take it home and add some sugar free cherry pie filling on top!

5.Eat the good carbs! Fruit and fruit juices are good carbohydrate choices that often satisfy your sweet-tooth!

6.Try to never drink carbs or calories! There are so many great diet drinks out there…drinking empty calories or carbs really doesn’t make sense. My one exception to this rule is while working out…a good sports drink with some electrolytes can be an excellent choice.

7.Keep a back up for when you’re feeling you may cave! Gum works really well. Apparently the ever-so-obvious people from product placement at the Biggest Loser think so too!

8.Choose a day to cheat. Sometimes it’s okay to cheat. Set aside a cheat-day for yourself. One day a week (or less, if you’re brave) is good enough. A friend of mine eats whatever she pleases on Sundays. She doesn’t count calories or carbs on this day, and she’s been able to maintain an 80 pound weigh-loss for 8 years!

9.Remember how good you feel. Going low-carb can be a difficult thing to do. However, it does make you feel great. My sugars get much more level, and overall I feel so much better. Remember that when you’re about have some leftover birthday cake.

10.Do it with a buddy. Having support makes things much easier!

Back to the routine

Well, I've been out and about so much lately that I haven't had time to blog.  Have you heard the saying; "Living not Blogging"?  Well, that's been me I guess.  Not meant to be an excuse, just and explanation.  I did okay eating my first two and a half days in Seattle.  Came home and washed laundry, did dishes and grocery shopping then packed up our stuff again for another four day weekend.  This time we went to Yellowstone.  We did TONS of driving and hardly any exercise at all (had my 80 year old grandparents with us, they don't get around too well) but we did go pretty long between meals and I didn't do much snacking so I feel good about that.
Tomorrow I'm planning on getting back into the routine.  I've done so much traveling this summer I don't care if I see another suit case until at least Christmas.  There may be a Thanksgiving trip though, who knows!
I'm very much one to love the routine, so I'm glad to get back to it.

MJM

I haven't don well at posting lately.

I've done even worse at eating healthy.

Two good reasons why my weight has gone UP.

Today I am posting to remind myself why I want to eat healthy and lose weight.

1) I want to be healthy. I want to live a long time. I want to lead an active lifestyle. I want to be able to play with my kids and grandkids. I have a family history of diabetes and I would like to avoid that. I just plain feel better and have more energy when I eat better.

2) I want to feel better about myself. By losing weight, I will look better and fit into clothes better. This increases my self-esteem. I am not seeking to be model-skinny but I'd like to look healthy.

3) My body is a temple and I should treat it as such.

Monday:
B: slim fast and banana
L: southwest salad with grilled chicken from McDonald's
D: leftover pot pie, only ate a little of the breading
S: 2 fruit snacks (had two lows), Yoplait light, banana

E: Well, I was really excited about hitting the pool on Monday morning after a week off. I walked into the gym and my one month membership was "about to expire" and I asked about renewing. The front-desk lady told me I could wait a few days. I walked out to the pool and it was drained. CRAP! They're refinishing it and it won't be open until OCTOBER FIRST!!! Double CRAP!
I'm not sure WHAT I'm going to do for exercise. My husband has an incredibly packed schedule and exercising with a five year old and two year old in tow can prove to be disastrous (Did I tell you about Friday's "work out"? No, well, it was a DISASTER!)
I also have the dang planar fascists so I can't do any kind of out of the water exercise without suffering a ton of pain and further injuring my feet. Triple CRAP!
Anyhow.... I ended up pulling the kids in the wagon for a mile. Something is better than nothing I suppose.

MJMs Food Log

Monday I ate the following:

L: 2 slices of pizza (again with the pizza, no more I say) 1 piece of cake, 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream
D: fiber one cereal with strawberries
S: .5 c crackers

E: 30 minutes Krank, 60 minutes water aerobics

Husband is back in town and I can resume my morning swim. One week till the boy starts school. Hoping to keep up the swimming while adding in the new routine of school.

MJMs Food Log and Weigh In

Saturday I ate the following:

1/3 C Malt-O-Meal cereal sweetened with brown sugar
1 Fiber One bar
1 small Heath bar shake (from Iceberg - YUM!)
1 peach
lots of grapes
2 bowls of cold cereal with milk
1 chocolate cookie

I didn't eat especially well. I did drink at least 1/2 gallon of water. I also hiked Catherine pass. I hiked quite a bit and then ran the entire way down (about 3 miles) so I got in some good exercise.

I am very excited! I lost everything I gained in Yellowstone!!!! I am back to the exact weight I was at 2 weeks ago. Now I can work on getting my weight actually going down and not just keep re-losing that which I previously lost and then gained.

Friday:
B: french toast
L: slim fast and banana
D: home made chicken pot pie
S: 3 mini twix, yogurt, hand full of fiber cereal

Weigh in:
took me 4 weeks to loose 3.5 pounds
took me 1 week to gain 4 pounds
overall: I'm up .5
awesome

I'm not giving up. This is hard. Harder than I thought. When I'm not working full-time I just GAIN WEIGHT. It is frustrating but I'm learning how to stay at home and not eat all day long. Now I just have to learn to make better food choices. I'm not at all proud of my daily food logs. I know that I've eaten too much, but I'm plugging along. Will keep at it.

MJMs Food Log

Today I ate:

2 C light chocolate soy milk with 2 C strawberries and 1 banana
fat-free turkey, pepperjack cheese sandwich on light wheat bread with tomato and lettuce
1 apple
1 stalk celery with peanut butter
1/3 C Malt-O-Meal cereal with brown sugar
2 bites of a Wunderbar
dough of 1 chocolate cookie

I drank 1/2 gallon of water, did 1 hour of Jazzercise, and walked quite a bit around the BYU campus throughout the day.

I am encouraged because the weight I put on in Yellowstone is coming off.

1 fat-free turkey sandwich with light wheat bread, reduced fat pepperjack cheese, tomato, and lettuce
1 slice light wheat bread
1 C nonfat yogurt with tropical fruit mixed in (pineapple, mango, and strawberries)
1 fudge bar

I've only gotten 1/2 gallon of water each day of Education Week (and still I have to go to the bathroom in between EVERY class) but I am getting lots of extra walking and stairs while tromping around the BYU campus.

In addition, I did 45 minutes of Jazzercise this morning and played kickball and dodgeball with the YM/YW tonight. Trying to keep up with those youth shoulc count for something (or at least burn a few extra calories!)

I didn't get my lazy butt out of bed for swimming and that's not a good thing because Monday and Tuesday were my only swimming days this week due to a change in my husband's schedule. However, I'm planning on walking on Friday which I haven't been able to do due to some plantar fascitis, which is awful! I'm also signed up for Krank and Water Aerobics on Saturday!

MJMs Food Log

Monday's menu:

2 C light chocolate soy milk with 2 C strawberries and 1 banana
1 apple
1 Fiber One bar
3 oz fat-free smoked turkey breast
1 piece peanut butter fudge
dried apple slices

Tuesday's menu:

2 C light chocolate soy milk with 2 C strawberries and 1 banana
1 apple
fat-free turkey sandwich on light wheat bread with lettuce and tomato
1 piece german chocolate fudge
2 oz fat-free smoked turkey breast
1 slice light wheat bread
dried apple slices

I gained over 6 pounds on my trip last week. Ugh! Could my weight go up and down any more? I've gotten back on track and lost over 3 pounds of it (probably mostly water weight).

Not much variety in my menu this week since I am running back and forth to BYU Education Week but at least it's healthier than what I ate last week.

Jen - Congratulations on the weight loss! Great job!

Weigh In SFS

I weighed in on Friday morning and I was down 3.5 pounds!!!! I was so excited and gave myself a congratulatory speech in the shower. :)

What did I do differently?

I'm not sure, but here's a few things that I've been trying that I think may have contributed.
1. I didn't give up. I've kept up the "diet" or at least counting my calories. I've kept swimming and doing other exercises. Thank Marvelle for creating this website where I can keep going on the blogging.
2. I told myself I could do it. I watched something on TV that inspired me to use a little positive self-talk. I figured if I kept telling myself that I'd never lost any weight, I wouldn't. So, I switched it up and told myself a few times per day that I could do it, that I could loose weight.
3. I took my best friend's advice and I stayed off the scale. We normally keep a scale in our bathroom and my sister-in-law had moved it to weigh her luggage. I left it out of the bathroom until the end of the week. This morning I brought it up and weighed in and was ecstatic about the results.
4. I saw something on Oprah (I know...) and tried to only eat when I was hungry, and slow down and eat in a calm place. Sometimes I eat while I'm fixing lunch for the kids, or in front of the TV, or while on the computer, etc.

It's been 4 weeks since I started swimming so that is ALMOST a pound a week.
Anyway, I'm excited and I hope that I'll be able to loose at least 20 more pounds.

MJMs weigh-in

Yea!

I climbed on the scales this morning for one last weigh-in before my week-long campout in Yellowstone.

I lost the girls' camp weight (must have been water weight gain) plus 0.4 of a pound.

Yea!

It's been very slow but I've lost a few pounds since starting this blog.

Here's the rundown (again the numbers are the last two digits of my weight):
start 7/14 - 6.6
7/21 - 4.6
7/28 - 4.4
8/2 - 3.6
today - 3.2

Now if I can just not gain on the Yellowstone trip. I won't have internet access for a while so I won't be posting.

same old

I know I haven't been very good at posting my logs and such this week. I haven't been keeping track of my calories on my app either. I'm eating the same old foods, doing the same old exercises. Still haven't lost an ounce.

This week I was busy with projects at home. Very busy. I had plans to do one big project and unexpectedly my husband motivated me to get another one crossed off my list before fall comes, in fact, before Saturday came. These particular projects kept me doing physical activity and now I'm sore! :) I love being sore though, it helps me know that I've been moving my body and that is my goal, keep moving!

I have a friend who does a fitness blog. It's cool. Check it out here. I even did a guest post on there once. I'll have to tell you about that sometime.

MJMs Food Log

This morning was the moment of truth when I stepped on the scale after being at girls' camp. I gain 2.4 pounds. It is hard to believe I could gain 0.8 pounds per day. Now I have a couple of days to eat well before I spend a week camping in Yellowstone (I already know I don't eat well when I'm camping).

Yesterday I ate the following:
1 slice ham
1 English muffn (plain)
watermelon and cantaloupe
1 orange
2 C cinnamon Chex (dry)
lots of black licorice
1/3 C Malt-O-Meal cereal with brown sugar
1 chocolate bar
1/3 C Zoom with brown sugar

No exercise. Little water. No veggies.

This morning was the moment of truth...climbing on the scale after girls' camp. I was up 2.4 pounds. It seems almost unbelievable that I could possibly gain 0.8 pounds per day. I have a couple of days to get back on track before I leave for a week of camping in Yellowstone (I already know that I don't eat well when I'm camping).

Here's my food for yesterday:

MJM - Girls' Camp

Aaacck!

Just got back from girls' camp where I ate horribly. We tried foods such as roasted Twinkies (really yummy) and gourmet s'mores made with Reese's and Mounds and Milky Ways and so on. Ate so much. Ate so much sugar. No exercise. I intended to go running this morning until I stayed up until 3 am.

Not wanting to step on the scale tomorrow.

Back on Track

As of today Wednesday, I know I am back on track when I am willing to run in the heat and high humidity for 40 minutes. I am in Minneaplois and it is hot and humid. Lets see my last post had me eating 3 Chocolate Chip cookies yum but baaaaaaad. I didn't finish the day with cookies though my main meal for Monday was a footlong turkey breast and ham sandwich with pepperjack cheese and all the vegetables available at Subway. MJMs Weigh In

I'll be out of town again for the next few days so I weighed this morning.

I am down 0.8 pounds. Yea! It's not a lot but it's down and I'll take my victories where I can get them.

I got a new digital scale a few weeks ago. My weight is still too embarrassing to report but I'll divulge the last digits.

2 weeks ago - 4.6
1 week ago - 4.4
today - 3.6

Slow, but it IS a downward trend.

(oops, pushed save not post on Tuesday)

MJMs Food Log

Today I ate:

lots of cherries
3 oz fat-free turkey breast
1 tomato
1 chocolate cupcake
too many licks of banana bar and peanut butter bar batter
1 cheese quesadilla

Not a heavy eating day (running around TOO much) but not the healthiest of food choices. In addition, I did fairly good on water. I also ran 2 miles and did a Jazzercise class.

Gaining Weight and not caring (help)

Lost interest. Sometimes it just seems to hard. When I dont pack food for work I have to eat out and so I eat nice fattening things that I like so it is a difficult battle. Unfortuately I dont like salads I like fat greasy foods so I have been eating those and the scales show it I gained 5 lbs. Don't look to me as a good example, but the great thing about telling the truth is it simply embarrasses you. hehehe. Today all I have eaten so far is 3 chocloate chip cookies. I need to find a Subway or something. Maybe exercise would help. huh! I will have to ponder that one.

MJMs Food Log

Well, yesterday was Fast Sunday so not too much food eaten.

4 oz Tillapia
1/2 C broccoli slaw
1/2 C chicken poppyseed pasta salad
broccoli, carrots, snow peas, tomatoes
chips and salsa (probably too much of this but the salsa was FRESH!)
blueberry and peach tart

I didn't drink much water and no exercise.

SugarFreeSweety is Cranking it up on Saturday

Saturday morning I attended my first-ever CRANK class. It's a really cool workout machine. The best way to describe it is an exercise bike for your arms. You crank this thing around. There are a few cool things about this class.

1. It's fun
2. It's only 30 minutes
3. It starts 30 minutes before water aerobics
4. My old High School swim coach teaches the class
5. It's fun!

My mom and I got a wild hair and decided to do crank and water aerobics back to back. It was a lot of fun. And, it whooped both our butts! :) I love it when my muscles hurt. The instructor told me I'd be okay as long as I didn't have to lift up any small children today. Ha ha ha! I have a two year old!

Anyway:
Here's what I ate today:

Breakfast:
2 bananas and a slim fast shake

Snack:
fiber one bar

Lunch:
Philly cheese steak sandwich (with a big yummy hoagie roll- crap!)
frozen yogurt with strawberries and granola

Dinner:
celery & peanut butter
graham crackers
Ritz crackers

I had thumbs up on:
+exercise
+fiber (5 servings of fruits and veggies)
+sodium
+water (at least 12 glasses)
+low fat

and a thumbs down on:
-sodium

SugarFreeSweety: Friday

I didn't eat any bread yesterday!
I DID eat LOTS of sugar. Crap.

I swam again on Friday morning. I was a little bit faster and was able to swim a little bit longer.
I love swimming. It's really hard to put it into words but I just feel like its making me strong. The absolute hardest part is getting out of bed. If I can just get my butt off the mattress, then I'm really great; even for the rest of the day. Just getting up is difficult, I have to convince myself that I want to go. Each day I do, I'm really pleased. My goal was 3 days per week swimming, and I've done it!

I didn't track my calories... so I have no idea... not a good thing.

Today will be a new day.

Taking it day by day.

MJMs restart

It's been a few days since I posted. I went to Canada and my computer crashed. Vancouver was delightful, the computer crashing was NOT!

I can't remember everything I ate the last few days - let's suffice it to say that it was too much food and not enough of things that were good for me. I tried lots of new foods which is always a fun experience. Kevin and I shared a plate of Greek food that was really yummy!

I weighed before I left and was down a measly 0.2 pounds for the week. That was a bit discouraging. Then, I ate in Vancouver for 3 days and now I'm up 0.8. How quickly the weight goes on and how slowly it comes off.

I was very active in Vancouver. Well, the first day I wasn't but the second day Kevin and I walked all over. Plus, we rented a tandem bike and pedaled all over for 1 1/2 hours. The third day I worked out for 2 hours. I ran outside for 4 miles, then came in and used the stationary bike and rode for 8 miles. I did some free weight work and then ended with another couple of miles on the treadmill.

Unfortunately, the weight gain just goes to show that probably 95% of my weight loss is food and only 5% is exercise. I've always been really consistent about exercising. It's watching what I eat that gives me trouble.

So, I'm back home and back to watching what I eat!

What day is it?

Okay so Wednesday:
Breakfast: Banana nut Cheerios (pretty tasty!)

267 calories

Lunch
chicken soft taco
rice
beans
chips

434 calories

Dinner
yoplait smoothie (yummy)
chips and cheese

369 calories

Snacks
yogurt
buttered toast
cookies

502 calories

exercises:
30 minutes of swimming

I've figured out I'm doing a half mile each morning. That's pretty good!

Thursday:

Breakfast:
cold cereal
166

Lunch
chicken and rice casserole
159

Dinner
protein burger
330

Snacks
fiber one bar
cheezits
el fudge cookies
623

Exercise:
None really. We had a rough night with the boys and I turned off my alarm at 4:00 when I put them both back to bed.... I did pull them in the wagon down to the park but my sis in law pulled it back. Not even a half mile there. Bleh!

I suck! I haven't lost any weight and if I'm being REALLY honest, it's because I'm not sticking to my plan. I eat too many calories between meals, too much junk food. So, I'm going to try to recommit and really work hard on no bread and no sugar.
There is this weird thing that happens when you're diabetic. You cut out the sugar, and your blood-sugars go down!

But here's what happens. I start getting really afraid that I'll go TOO low (lows are the worst!), so I just eat more to compensate. It's a really tough balance. My insulin pump is set to give me specific amounts of insulin throughout the day and when I kick up the exercise and change my eating habits, my blood sugar levels also change (decrease). I just have to figure out how to balance it all. Maybe I'll buy some of those nasty glucose tablets to carry in my purse.

update, sugarfreesweety

I'll just do a quick update today.
Monday and Tuesday were pretty good days for me.
I ate pretty well and exercised too.
Monday my analysis page on my diet app told me I had ALL thumbs up! I was pretty excited about that.
Yesterday I only had one thumbs down!
I swam on Monday and Tuesday I slept through my alarm, but my mother redeemed me and called me to go to water aerobics with her in the evening. I was able to arrange my schedule to get the exercise in, and I felt really good about that too.
I can burn the same amount of calories in 30 minutes of swimming as in 60 minutes of water aerobics, but it's nice to switch it up and try something new.
I've REALLY been loving the swimming. It's definitely a challenge for me to wake up so early, but I feel so good that I'm willing to do it, and I feel even greater afterward.

Losing Daze

Wow, I have missed a few days here. Let see I guess I better review yesterday.
B: No Bake Cookies
sn: No Snack
L: Dried Apples
Sn: Dry Roasted Peanuts
D: BK Whopper Jr., Fries, Root Beer
Sn: Biscoff Cookies and more Dry Roasted Peanuts
Wow can't believe I ate that poorly
Water: 92 oz
Well I obviously need more fruits and vegetables eating like this is going to kill me.

MJMs Food Log

Yesterday I ate the following:

1/3 C 7-grain cereal
1 apple
1 C fat-free yogurt with 1/2 C granola
6 pieces of chocolate
1/2 C peanuts
1 C cold cereal with milk
lots of cherries
1 no-bake cookie

I didn't eat any vegetables at all! I am not only trying not to overeat but I'm trying to make healthy food choices. I am really good at eating plenty of fruit during the summer but I'm not always as good about eating my vegetables.

I also only drank 1/2 gallon of water. (I try to drink a full gallon.)

I did an hour of Jazzercise and then spent the day moving furniture so I made lots and lots of trips up and down the stairs (that should count for something).

SugarFreeSweety, food log

Yesterday I ate:
Breakfast:
2 waffles with strawberries 507
Lunch:
2 packets of fruit snacks and a fiber one bar 250
Dinner:
1 chicken taco
1 pork taco 479
Dessert:
several cookies (darn, I've got to get away from those things)
1/2 c. sherbet 497
Total calories: 1733
Exercise: none

My analysis told me I should have exercised more by 447 calories

My scale told me I was down by two pounds. However, this isn't a loss because I actually gained three pounds last week. S0, I have to loose 1 more pound before I can actually start losing weight for real.

MJMs Food Log

Yesterday was a much better day. It really helps when I am at home.

1 C fat-free yogurt with 1/2 C granola mixed in
1 apple
2 C milk with strawberries, soy protein powder, and wheat germ
1 burrito (small)
1 large cucumber
1 no-bake cookie

The eating was better but I didn't even get 8 glasses of water drank.

MJMs Food Log

Another not great day.

1/3 C 7-grain cereal
1/2 Quine Amann (French pastry)
1 slice multi-grain bread
chicken salad sandwich
cherries
string cheese
orange creamsicle
2 slices pizza
1 Godiva chocolate bar

Notice the lack of vegetables and the last 3 items. Ugh! Also, my only exercise for the day was moving furniture - not the greatest cardio workout though it porbably burned some calories. I pledge to have a great eating day tomorrow!

New Day!

Oops missed yesterday just living life in the fast lane and didn't find a computer last night. So heres todays eating;

B: Bagel, Raisin Bread, Kit Kat
Sn: None
L: Turkey Sandwich, Chips, Grapes, Kettle Corn
Sn: None
D: Pizza, Ice Cream, Laffy Taffy
And lots of water for the heat!

MJMs Food Log

I do NOT want to post what I ate yesterday.

Oh, well. I guess I'll just get this over with. Here goes...

1/3 C 7-grain cereal
1 poptart
lots of watermelon
chicken Caesar salad wrap
1 ice cream drumstick
1 piece fried chicken
1 roll
1/4 C coleslaw
1/4 C jello
cherries
grapes
1 fudgesicle
2 No-bake cookies

Could I have eaten any more? (yes, probably but that's beside the point). I actually did okay until about 7 pm. The last 9 items on the list were eaten after that. The ice cream was trying to fend off the overheating from being on the soccer field all day. The rest was dinner at my Mom's.

I did do a Jazzercise class today and drank nearly a gallon of water.

I'll do better today!

blood sugar got low after breakfast so I ate a Fiber One bar, 90 calories

Total: 1431

Exercise:
I cleaned out my garage, it took three hours. I burned 737 calories.

Net calories for the day: 694

I have an app on my phone that tracks my calories. I really like the app because it has a plan where I can customize my weight, my goals, my other nutrition and fitness goals. What I like best about it is the analysis at the end. It tells me how many calories I ate, how many I burned, and how I did based on my goals. It also gives me like three thumbs up and a couple of thumbs down for what I did well and not so well on for the day. I always struggle with sodium. Does anyone have any good tips for lowering sodium?

MJMs Food Log

Yesterday I ate the following:

1 C cold cereal with milk
chicken salad sandwich
1/2 roll
1 1/2 servings Lays potato chips
tons of cherries
1 snowcone
strawberries with milk, soy protein powder, and wheat germ
monkey bread
tons of watermelon
1 wunderbar (Kevin brought home as a special treat from Canada - can't get them in the U.S.)

As you can see - not a great eating day. The only veggies I got was the celery in the chicken salad. Also, chips and treats. On the other hand, I did spend the entire day in Layton at a soccer tournament so my eating could have been much worse!

Also, I did get most of my water drank, did a Jazzercise class, and ran 3 miles.

Thursday, July 22, 2010

Bad Eating Day!

B: Blueberry Muffin & Pink Grapefruit Juice
L: Turkey Sandwich
Sn: Potato Chips sm bag, Hot Dog and Cherry Slush, Another Turkey Sandwich
D: Hot Dog, sm bag of Chips

I snacked on different things all day, just can't remember what they were. I must be alittle stressed since I tend to eat when I am stressed. Anyway I tend to do this if I am not committed to count my calories and just write them down. Tomorrow I will count the calories. I knew there was a reason I was doing that.
Exercise: 0, haven't done that since Monday--Must try harder
Water: 80 oz

I feel pretty good about my eating yesterday. I was a little extra motivated because of the 2 lb weight loss. I got an hour of Jazzercise step class in (using double risers - ugh) and drank a gallon of water. Not a bad day!

Plus and Minus

What I ate:

slim fast shake with strawberries
2 slices of pepperoni pizza
1 banana
1 carton of yoplait light
1 fiber one bar
1/2 c. wheat thins
1 otter pop

1 Weight Watchers mint ice cream sandwich (a delicious 140 calories)

How I worked out:

30 minutes of swimming laps
1 mile of walking while pulling my kids in the wagon

Positives: My blood sugars have been nearly PERFECT! Each time I test I've been about 100 and that's perfect. I've been really concerned in starting lap swimming that I'll have too many low blood sugars, but I've been timing my carbohydrate intake and exercise and it's worked out really well. I'm so pleased.

Negatives: Bread. I ate pizza today and I wish I'd made a smarter non-bread choice.

Eating, Eating, Eating

Another Day of food! I feel full right now as I have eaten two good meals today.

I'm DOWN 2 pounds! Yea!

That's exactly what I'd like to do - lose 1-2 pounds per week.

MJMs Food Log

Yesterday I ate the following:

watermelon
1/3 C Malt O Meal cereal with a little brown sugar
1 cucumber
1 apple
1 celery with peanut butter
3 oz. fat-free turkey breast
1 piece whole wheat toast

I thought I'd switch it up today and log my exercise for the past day and a half.

Yesterday I walked the Porter Rockwell Trail with my mom for 60 minutes.

I pruned three trees and did a little other yard work.

And, I helped a neighbor prep for a new fence, so I did some shoveling.

Today I woke up early and hit the pool.
I did 1200 yards, pretty much continuously swimming for 30 minutes. Not too bad since I haven't actually swam laps for YEARS!

Then, I walked a pretty slow pace for about 45 minutes.

Planning on swimming more laps tomorrow.

MJMs Food Log

Yesterday I ate the following:

1 piece chocolate haystack
1 cheese quesadilla

Again, I had planned for more veggies but ended up doing a few spur of the moment activities which took me away from home for a large chunk of the day. I did drink a gallon of water and did a Jazzercise class and ran 3 miles.

Goal for tomorrow: no sweets!

sugarfreesweety- kick off

I'm joining MJM on the Why Weight blog.
I'm excited to have a place to talk about weight loss and look forward to seeing some personal improvements.
I've NEVER lost any weight In. My. Life.
I don't really know I even know how to do it. But, I'm ready to give it a REAL effort and I do have a plan.
So, for my first post, I'll lay out my plan. I'll post to update on my progress, and I hope to do so often, maybe daily!

The Plan:
1. eat no bread
2. eat nothing made from white flour (enriched/bleached)
3. eat no sugar
4. exercises 30 minutes of cardio at least 4 times per week

I've done 4 days so far of the no bread and no sugar, but I've had a harder time making it to the gym. Hoping, like MJM, that by posting, I'll do better.

Wish me luck!

where I've been and where I want to be

As I said in my first post, I had lost 53 pounds in the first several months of this year. Yea! Unfortunately, I got off the wagon during the 4th and the family reunion and gained 5 pounds. Eek! Besides that, even with the 53 pound loss I still couldn't possibly be accused of being "too skinny" - not by any stretch of imagination!

I want to lose the 5 pounds plus another 10.

I love food, though! I enjoy food that is good for me (fruit, whole grains, etc) but I also really enjoy baked goods, sugar, and CHOCOLATE! Even when I try to stick to foods that are healthier, I tend to eat TOO much of them.

In losing the 53 pounds, I cut out most carbs and sugar. I'm not quite ready to go that drastic again but I am hoping to reduce my caloric intake (less food, less junk). I'm hoping that posting what I eat will prevent me from, at the very least, eating everything I want.

MJMs food log

Yesterday I ate the following:

strawberries, raspberries, and milk mixed with soy protein powder and wheat gern
1/2 BBQ chicken pineapple panini
1/2 C macaroni and cheese
peach
celery with peanut butter
apple
sausage/apple/potato skillet
2 bites of brownie

I also drank 14 cups of water and did an hour of Jazzercise.

Calorie Mgr

Hi;
I decided to title this Calorie Manager since this seems to be the battle of my life. Like many people I like to eat particularly sugary baked goods, chocolate chip cookies and ice cream are a few of my vises. My hope is to find and learn to like alot more foods that are good for me and keep to the right portion sizes and shrink my stomach so I am the right size and eating the correct number of calories for my body size and bone structure. Therefore, I am pledging to put all the foods that I eat on this blog for at least a month and then try it keep doing it daily. Also, I am planned on adding any exercise activities that will help keep my heart in shape. I have 30 lbs to lose. Lets see how it goes. Hopefully many will join so we can be a support group to help one another.

MJM's Food Log

Yesterday I ate the following:

1 banana, 1/3 C 7-whole-grain cereal, 1 C Thai peanut noodles, 1 stalk celery with peanut butter, Zupa's mangoberry salad and 1/2 barbeque chicken pineapple panini and bread and chocolate dipped strawberry and walnut caramel brownie.

It was an okay eating day (I know, the brownie is not low-cal or low-fat but whatever). I got plenty of fruits/vegetables but only 9 glasses of water (I like to get 16 cups).
